How Often Should You Get Facial Acupuncture?

The short answer

Facial acupuncture works best in two phases: a series of closely spaced sessions to build results, then maintenance visits to keep them. How often you come in depends on your skin, your goals, and what is happening in the rest of your body.

PhaseHow oftenHow many sessions
Initial seriesOnce a week10 to 12
MaintenanceOnce a month to every other monthOngoing
Before an event1 to 2 sessions in the 2 weeks prior1 to 2

Most people see a change in skin texture and tone after five or six sessions.

Most people see a change in skin texture and tone after five or six sessions. Here is how I build your schedule, and how to tell when it needs to change.

The two phases

Phase 1: The initial series

Plan on 10 to 12 sessions, once a week. Results build from one session to the next, so steady spacing matters more than any single visit.

Research supports a steady, focused series. In a 2025 randomized controlled trial on frown lines, women who received 12 sessions over six weeks saw clear improvement, with 63.9% showing notable change at rest and 72.2% while frowning (Dermatology Times).

Phase 2: Maintenance

Once your series is complete, sessions spread out to keep your results. Visits once a month or every other month continue to strengthen your skin’s elasticity and support collagen production.

Because each session includes body points, maintenance visits support your nervous system and overall balance, not only your skin.

Schedule by skin concern

Your starting schedule depends on what you want to change. These are the starting points I use, and I adjust them as your skin responds.

ConcernStarting scheduleWhat I watch for
Fine lines and firmnessOnce a weekGradual softening of lines over the series
Breakouts or inflammationOnce a weekCalmer skin, fewer new flare-ups
Puffiness or dullnessOnce a weekBrighter tone, less morning puffiness
Sensitive or reactive skinOnce a week, or every other weekRedness that settles within a day

When hormones are shifting

If you are in perimenopause or menopause, your skin is changing from the inside. Estrogen supports collagen and moisture, so as it declines, many people notice drier skin, more fine lines, and less firmness.

This is why I treat the whole body, not only the face. A facial acupuncture session in my practice also includes points for sleep, stress, hot flashes, and digestion, because those affect your skin too.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, hormones relate to the Liver, Kidney, and Spleen meridians, and the skin relates to the Lung. The Lung has a direct connection to each of these meridians, so supporting your hormones also supports your skin.

Your complexion reflects your Heart, and each organ has its own area on the face. This is why your emotional wellbeing shows on your face too. To learn which pattern is most active for you, take the Heart Energy is Qi quiz.

Timing around events and other treatments

Before an event. Book one or two sessions in the two weeks before. Mild bruising at a needle point is uncommon, but it can happen, so leave a few days between your last session and the day itself.

With LED light therapy. Celluma LED pairs well with facial acupuncture and can be added to the same visit.

With micro-needling. Wait at least 72 hours after micro-needling before facial acupuncture (Henry Ford Health). I plan these together so your skin has time to recover.

What to expect over time

Facial acupuncture is gradual. Unlike neuromodulators or fillers, you will not see lines disappear after one session. Most people notice a change in texture and glow after five or six sessions, with firmness and softer lines building over the following months (Henry Ford Health).

Signs your schedule needs a change

What you noticeWhat we adjust
Redness or sensitivity that lasts more than a dayMore time between sessions, gentler needling
Tired or drained after sessionsPoint selection and spacing
Little change after six sessionsTechnique and treatment focus

I reassess your plan every four to six sessions, so your schedule follows how your skin and body respond.

How I build your plan

I have been a licensed acupuncturist for 15 years, with a focus on hormonal health, nervous system regulation, and facial acupuncture. Your plan starts with a conversation about your skin goals, health history, sleep, stress, and where you are hormonally.

From there, we set your initial series together. If your skin or your life changes, your schedule changes with it.

If you are ready to begin, you can book your facial acupuncture session at my Lafayette office, or learn more about facial acupuncture first.
